I’m not sure who read Dylan Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, but she started telling me the story the other day asking if I’d heard it. I love the excitement in her eyes when she learns something new and wants to share it with us. It doesn’t matter that I’ve known the story for decades (and decades…) seeing her joy makes it all new again.
As coaches, we feel the same way when our members achieve new goals and learn a new skill. Me doing a muscle up isn’t exciting anymore, but a new member getting their first pull up? Now that will have me jumping and shouting! So how do our members accomplish their goals and set new PRs? Goldilocks has some good advice actually.
Coach Goldilocks has 3 members in her CrossFit gym:
Papa CrossFitter trains everyday, only eats protein, and adds extra strength sessions five times a week in addition to classes. He adds extra weight to the workouts, even though he can’t do some of the movements as prescribed due to injuries and mobility limitations. In fact, he seems to always be nursing an injury and skips the warmup most classes because he’s too busy doing his own stretching.
Mama CrossFitter is consistent in the gym, she comes four times a week and is always early to class. But five years into CrossFit and she still uses the same blue band every time for pull ups. She’s never tried a muscle up, and isn’t even sure what the term “maxing out” means. She sees other people take protein after working out but thinks it’s not for her and it won’t help her achieve her goals, which she isn’t even sure what her goals are.
Baby CrossFitter just started, she’s excited to try it all and has already seen some improvement. Every new skill learned makes her want to add another and achieve another PR. She’s listening to Coach Goldilocks and stretching after workouts, started tracking macros, and is slowly getting faster and stronger. She really wants to make it to the top of the rope, but listens to her coach when she says she’s not ready yet.
Just like Goldilocks, our coaches know how to find the perfect balance. And thankfully they won’t steal your oatmeal or your bed in the process. When it comes to CrossFit- finding the optimal level of training, recovery, and nutrition can make all the difference in achieving your goals. Our coaches have years of experience in training, competing, nutrition, weight lifting, mobility recovery, all kinds of things to keep you at the top of your game.
CrossFit workouts are designed to complement each other and prevent overtraining. We carefully design the class workouts to be beneficial for everyone and scalable for every skill level. Warmups and cool downs aren’t random stretches, they’re included because they supplement the movements used in the workout to help your body prepare and recover.
At Eclipse we want you to work hard and achieve your goals. We want to sit down with you and discuss your goals, figure out what exactly YOU want, and then help you come up with a plan for success. We suggest doing this every quarter so you’re always pushing yourself and seeing improvement. If you don’t know what you’re trying to achieve there’s no way you’re achieving it, plain and simple. Clearly defined goals are the first step for progress, we don’t want you trying to guess what you should do next. We want to help you figure it out and make a plan of action!
So schedule a time to sit down with a coach and figure out what exactly your next goal should be! Plan out what it’s going to take to achieve that goal, and then most importantly, stick with that plan! After all, Goldilocks didn’t keep trying the other porridges after she found the perfect one, she knew she found the answer and stuck with it.
